Takachiho town has been recognized by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as a globally important model for a composite system of agricultural forestry, to be passed onto future generations as a World Agricultural Heritage Site (GIAHS) and a Biosphere Reserve.
Takachiho Town has received two certifications from global organizations for its unique agricultural traditions and biodiversity.
What is GIAHS?
GIAHS was established to conserve and pass on the unique traditions of agriculture, forestry and fishery, that have been passed down from generation to generation. These traditions and techniques have continued to adapt to the needs of an ever-changing society and environment. These traditions are not only important to the culture but also for the landscape, seascape and agricultural biodiversity that has been nurtured through these unique techniques.

What are Biosphere Reserves?
A Biosphere Reserves, is an area of land that has been designated by UNESCO with the aim of creating an area that strikes the perfect harmony between conservation and sustainable use of an ecosystem (symbiosis between nature and human society). Biosphere Reserves are part of the UNESCO Man and Biosphere (MAB) program, which is implemented by UNESCO’s Natural Sciences sector. The aim of these designated areas, is to not only conserve the rich biodiversity found within these ecosystems, but to also learn from nature and to achieve sustainable development that is beneficial to culture, the economy and society.
